Report on ICA Activities, August 1999 - May 2000

Alberta Auringer Wood
ICA Vice President

At the conference in Ottawa in August, I was elected as a Vice President of ICA, representing Canada. Peter Keller continues as Chair of the Canadian National Committee for ICA. The meeting in August was quite successful and has been reported on elsewhere. It did not make a lot of money, but did not lose a lot either! The organizing committee members were given an Earth Sciences Sector Merit Award, while the committee chairs also received an award from Natural Resources Canada. There have been two meetings of the Executive Committee since the election, one in Ottawa immediately after the election and one in December in Utrecht, The Netherlands. My responsibilities include liaison with two commissions, Maps and the Internet chaired by Michael Peterson of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Cartography and Children chaired by Jacqueline Anderson of Concordia University in Montreal. They will be holding commission sessions independently or in conjunction with other meetings in October and September, respectively. In addition, I was appointed chair of a working group on archiving with the mandate to draw up guidelines for past and present commission chairs, conference directors, and officers. As well, I am participating in the Publications Working Group. The next Executive Committee meeting is in Beijing, China, this August 6-9. The next technical conference is in Beijing, China, August 6-10, 2001 while the next General Assembly is in Durban, South Africa, in August 2003. General and contact information about ICA may be found on its web page: http://www.icaci.org/. If you have any questions, please contact me at awood@mun.ca or by phone at 1-709-737-8892.
