Association of Canadian Map Libraries and Archives
Report of the First Vice President, May 2002
Activities within the First Vice President portfolio have been primarily those carried out by the hard-working members of the committees that report through this position. I was please to participate with Grace Welch in discussions relating to the legal deposit of maps and the successfully concluded negotiations to include cartographic resources within the Depository Services Program. Grace has worked tirelessly to ensure that this initiative came to fruition; we owe her great thanks for her dedication to this outcome. It has been a pleasure to work with the Board and learn so much about issues of concern to us all.
I would like to thank the chairs and members of the committees below who offered their time and expertise to the Association in a variety of ways and commend their dedication to cartographic concerns. In particular, I would like to note those who are relinquishing their positions as we complete this business year.
First I would like to thank Jeff Murray who has maintained oversight of the Association Archives for a number of years. Jeff has decided the time has come to hand over to the next incumbent. A call for expression of interest was sent recently on the ACMLA list and a volunteer has kindly offered to take up this role. The duties of this position are to be discussed at the upcoming Board meeting and an announcement should follow shortly thereafter.
Bruce Weedmark has also decided that he will relinquish the onerous duties of Membership Chair. Bruce has maintained the membership portfolio with devotion and attention to detail that has been a great benefit to all members. Thank you Bruce, your work on our behalf is greatly appreciated!
The Awards Committee operated under the leadership of Lori Sugden and has enjoyed considerable success in identifying and selecting worthy candidates for the 2002 ACMLA Honours and Papers awards. These will be presented at the conference banquet.
The Bibliographic Control Committee has moved forward with its valuable work in conjunction with the National Library of Canada to ensure that bibliographic records for cartographic materials become more publicly available. They are continuing with the editing for a revised edition of Cartographic Materials: An Interpretation of AACR2. The document they prepared on Core Level Cataloguing for Non-Serial Cartographic Materials was not only published in the Bulletin but also added to the new cataloguing support section on the ACMLA web.
The Copyright Committee had a very quiet year. Richard Pinnell took over as Chair following the AGM last year. Information about copyright for Canadian map curators continues to be underwhelming. As we are all aware, copyright issues continue to arise in relation to both print and digital resources in our collections. Part of the proposed business plan envisages a toolbox on the ACMLA web that could bring together useful tips and links to relevant sites, for example, the Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography has a section 5.1 Legal Issues: Intellectual Property Rights (largely addressing American law) at http://info.lib.uh.edu/sepb/lcopyr.htm
Membership figures for 2001 show a total of 224 members generating an income of $9,095.79. This represents a steady state from the previous year and a slight increase above five years ago.
Conferences:
The Carto 2001 conference was not only a great success it raised more than $5000.00 for the Association's coffers (See the Treasurer's report). Details about the conference were published in both the ACMLA Bulletin and the CCA bulletin Cartouche. Deepest thanks for their contribution to the success of Carto 2001 go to Pierre Lepine, Pierre Roy, and Carol Marley. As has been recent practice, Alberta Wood kindly shared her photographic record of events with us via the web.
The 2002 conference is nearly upon us. ACMLA local arrangements have been under the direction of Marcel Fortin, with committee members Trudy Bodak, Cathy Moulder, Richard Pinnell, Pam Schaus, Jenny Marvin and Bernie Disonglo. This conference represents a new liaison with Capdu and the Congress of the Social Sciences and the Humanities.
Lori Sugden is our lead hand for the 2003 conference to be held in Victoria. This will be a joint venture with the CAG and the CCA. They have a web site at: http://www.geog.uvic.ca/dept/cag/2003/committee.html
Watch for announcements on Carta as details become available.
2004…?
Sites for future conferences will be discussed at the AGM. If you think you would like to be involved, let us know. The revised manual for conference planners is nearly ready to be used for comfort and guidance.
