REPORT OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL COMMITTEE FOR 2001-2002
Ongoing Projects
Work during the year focused on our two major projects:1. Revision of Cartographic Materials: An Interpretation of AACR2
Work on this project is still ongoing, but the end is in sight. It is hoped that an almost complete draft will be available to the members of the AACCCM (Anglo-American Cataloguing Committee for Cartographic Materials) for review sometime this summer or early fall. If the review process goes well, then publication may be late this year or early next year.
The work has been enlarged to include rules for cartographic material in electronic form, series and serials, and more extensive rules for early cartographic materials and remote-sensing images. The appendices are being revised, some will be dropped and new ones added. The glossary is also undergoing a major overhaul with many new terms added. This is a major revision, and a lot of work by many people has gone into it. Heartfelt appreciation goes to Velma and Grace for their contribution and for the endless time they have devoted to this work.
2. National Union Catalogue of Maps
Work on the National Union Catalogue of Maps is progressing well. The National Library of Canada staff have now loaded the files of 20 Canadian map institutions. The number of cartographic records available in AMICUS has reached over 100,000.
In November, Trudy Bodak, Lorraine Dubreuil, Velma Parker, Donna Porter, Grace Welch and Frank Williams attended a meeting in Ottawa with Ellen Katic, Emilie Lowenberg and Nicki Quintero from the Union Catalogue Division of the National Library of Canada to follow up on the status of the Union Catalogue of Maps and to plan for the coming year. Among our tasks, we continued to work on the document for Core Level Cataloguing for Non-Serial Cartographic Materials. We made some minor revisions, and added a few cataloguing examples prepared by Velma and Frank. AMICUS searching of cartographic materials was another area of focus. We identified some of the problems, and will be addressing ways of improving and enhancing access in AMICUS. Again, this year we worked on database cleanup. With ACMLA funding, we hired a student to continue with the GMD correction project (i.e. changing $hmap to $hcartographic material). The Union Catalogue Division staff report that to date there are only about 400 titles with the $hmap GMDs left to do, and all of the error logs for the major reporters have been processed.
Publicity for the Union Catalogue of Maps continues to be an ongoing goal. This year, a revised version of the Core Level Cataloguing for Non-Serial Cartographic Materials was published in the Fall 2001 issue of the ACMLA Bulletin. This document is also now accessible through the "Map Cataloguing" link on the ACMLA web site. Our "Map Cataloguing" web link was one of our notable accomplishments this year. This link went live in February, and houses documents and reports prepared by the Bibliographic Control Committee. This web site will be a useful mechanism for distributing information about the Union Catalogue of Maps and for keeping the community informed about resources, issues and developments relating to map cataloguing. Special thanks goes to Nan Fern, the ACMLA Webmaster, for her work in making the "Map Cataloguing" link a reality.
This report highlights some of the accomplishments of the Bibliographic Control Committee over this past year. None of this work would be possible without the commitment and cooperation of the members and the Union Catalogue Division staff of the National Library of Canada. Sincere thanks go to them.
Respectfully submitted,
